One additional thought your insightful essay brought to mind is the historical role of antisemitism as an organizing tool. If that dynamic is at work today, it raises an uncomfortable question: to what extent are some politicians, activists, and commentators consciously capitalizing on the very psychological and sociological mechanisms your essay describes? If they recognize that antisemitic rhetoric strengthens political identity and coalition cohesion, then they bear responsibility not only for what they say, but also for the social dynamics they intentionally or knowingly reinforce.

Such a great point and question.

Valuable insights. I would like to point out some Israel-connected matters that are in the mayor’s control:

1) Divestment of city funds from Israeli financial instruments

2) Termination of joint Israel innovation lab on city property

3) Cancellation of Israel training for NYPD

4) Cancellation of intelligence sharing between NYPD counter-intelligence and Israel

5) Cancellation (BDS) of any city purchases from Israeli companies

6) Cancellation of Israeli-related leases*

7) School curricula and related educational issues

8) Ending police protection and other punitive measures against synagogues that “support Israel.”

These are the ones that leap quickly to mind. There are probably others.

This is a brilliant piece of writing and while it's a topic I've thought a lot about, you hit a new 'aha' for me.

This notion that the left tried the internal version. I saw that at the time, but never connected the dots to how that's now easily externalized to the 'super white' Jew, who can do a much better job of filling the role than oneself or ones tribe.

I wrote a recent post about how the pro-Palestinian movement isn't really about the Palestinians. I'd be curious for your take.

“Far From the War, Close to the Jew” This phrase lands like a brick. It’s perfectly concise and answers the questions, “Why ZM? Why New York?””

Well done.

Wow, that was an excellent read.

A Democrat cannot with an election in 2026 unless they support the aims of Muslim Brotherhood and the IRCG. Full stop. Typing those words feels surreal. Like I’ve entered another dimension that feels somewhat like this universe but is not.

Joanne Strasser's avatar

Do you think that’s the case everywhere?

Obvi's avatar

Perhaps it’s recency and location bias on my part (I live in NYC) but you’ve brilliantly explained the political and social mechanisms that makes this seem inevitable. An entire generation of under-40 has been captured.

There will be pushback, of course, but I fear the tide has turned. Consider that 40 Senate democrats recently voted against the recent weapons sale to Israel, with 11 voting for it.

Joanne Strasser's avatar

Thank you, but I think I barely scratched the surface — I didn’t even get to social media 🤯 It will be interesting to learn more about this most recent election… I’m curious about voter turn out and demographics compared to previous elections.

Obvi's avatar

I believe the moderate Democrats (the ones who don’t openly rail against America, rent, borders, police, white people, Christians, Jews and of course, Israel) will rally, but will be washed away by the tide. Much like the “never trumpers”.

This is metastasizing at warp speed.

I am not ready to panic for the rest of the US. NYC is ground zero for Columbia University and several other prestige colleges with Middle East studies programs promoting Palestinian victim narratives developed by Prof. Edward Said at Columbia. The widespread narratives of oppressor (Israel) - oppressed (Gaza) gained traction after October 7 massacre and IDF response, on university campuses and elsewhere. Iran and Hamas engaged in a successful misinformation campaign against Israel and the IDF. Finally, a new campaign to fight antisemitism and antizionism will be underway as reported by Andrew Fox. However, the political campaigns for the midterms would be smart to plan for expressive voting as Joanne describes.

Maurice Doffman's avatar

It has happened in the UK with 5 independent members of the UK Parliament already having been elected on a ‘pro-Gaza’ ticket and there will be more in areas with a significantly Muslim electorate.

This is a brilliant and very astute take on things, highly original and very important for us to grasp

That significance can't be overemphasised , you've got near enough a moral law that's universal here!

Well done. Essential reading and has to be grappled with. Thank you!

The 12% of Jews in New York can stop voting for these people. Democrats may then lose 12% of their (clueless) voters.

Paul's avatar

When all other candidates choose to bend the knee to the Israeli lobby, he chose a moral stance.

Israel has long been an issue for the mayoral race, about to buy focus on New Yorkers and their concerns he won and that included a higher percent of Jewish voters!

Movin' On's avatar

What is the Israeli lobby? Are you really arguing that Israel got involved in the 2025 NYC election? Mossad injected beeper bombs into a supply chain to Hezbollah--i think they could have mucked things up for Mamdani last year.

Or are you conflating Israeli with Jew? In which case you are actually arguing that Jews have less free speech rights than others in America. You are also giving an implicit answer to "is antizionism antisemitism" debate.

Thank you for clarifying.

I'll take this silence as a failed hasbara bot that realised it lost!

Movin' On's avatar

No im just new to substack and replied to the wrong comment. Your AI generated novel length response is incoherent. You conflate AIPAC with direct israeli influence while accusing me of conflation.

All hasbara tends to fail because there are 15 million Jews (half in Israel) and billions of the rest of us. If we decide to scapegoat Jews then they will lose that popularity contest every time.

Paul's avatar

AIPACK was created to directly influence American politicians to support Israel and I provided a huge amount of evidence that is what it is doing!

Hasbara files because the truth is clear, Israel is committing genocide and propaganda will not cover that!

Movin' On's avatar

You don't understand how lobbying works. AIPAC supports candidates who are friendly to Israel. If it gave money to you, would you change your tune on Israel?

Dem candidates today care much more about capitalizing on your weaponized nonsense definition of genocide to rile up the left than they do about cash. The cash is not the point in itself its just a means to campaign better to get more votes. If you can get votes directly by scapegoating half the world's Jews then no amount of campaign donations will be an answer to that.

Paul's avatar

What you describe as "just lobbying" is institutional corruption: using vast financial power to buy policy and defeat critics of a foreign state.

Equating the Israeli government with "half the world's Jews" is antisemitic. Israel is a sovereign state, not a stand-in for all Jewish people.

Dismissing genocide as "weaponized nonsense" ignores legal facts and extensive documentation by international bodies:

- ICJ Order on plausible genocide: https://www.icj-cij.org/node/203454

- UN Human Rights Office report: https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2024/11/un-human-rights-office-report-gaza

- Amnesty International documentation: https://www.amnesty.org/en/documents/mde15/8608/2024/en/

Paul's avatar

You are conflating Jewish people with the state of Israel—two entirely distinct entities.

Israel is a foreign sovereign nation-state with its own government, military, and intelligence services. Jewish people are an ethnic religious group living across the world, many of whom have zero connection to Israel, do not support its government, or are among its most vocal critics. Conflating the actions, interests, or lobbying efforts of a foreign state with Jewish people everywhere is not only logically fallacious, but it is also inherently anti-Semitic—it relies on the trope of dual loyalty and uses Jewish identity as a human shield to insulate a foreign government from political criticism.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗔𝗜𝗣𝗔𝗖?

AIPAC (the American Israel Public Affairs Committee) is a massive US lobbying group that openly works to influence American foreign policy and domestic elections in favour of the Israeli government. It operates directly within US politics through its PAC and affiliated super PACs (like United Democracy Project), spending tens of millions of dollars in primary and general elections to defeat politicians critical of Israel and boost those who commit to unconditional support. To track AIPAC’s campaign funding, disbursements, and political strategy, you can use these public resources:

• 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗔𝗜𝗣𝗔𝗖 — An independent watchdog platform documenting AIPAC's election spending, candidate endorsements, and contributions.

• 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘀 - 𝗔𝗜𝗣𝗔𝗖 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗲 — Tracks official campaign finance data, lobbyist registration, and PAC spending via the FEC.

• 𝗙𝗘𝗖.𝗴𝗼𝘃 𝗔𝗜𝗣𝗔𝗖 𝗣𝗔𝗖 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 — Official US government campaign finance disclosures detailing donations and expenditures.

𝗟𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗦

The issue of the Israeli lobby isn't a shadow conspiracy; it is standard, overt political lobbying where American politicians openly align themselves with the interests of a foreign government, sometimes prioritizing it over American domestic interests or constitutional rights:

• 𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘆 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗲 (𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗻 / 𝗨𝗦 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲): Fine has repeatedly made statements making support for Israel a primary litmus test for patriotism and rights, once tweeting that if forced to choose, "𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘢 𝘑𝘦𝘸 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵, 𝘢𝘯 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥." He has consistently advocated for state and federal policies that punish American citizens or organizations that boycott or criticize the state of Israel.

• 𝗧𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗿𝘂𝘇 (𝗨𝗦 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿): Cruz has explicitly framed American foreign policy around defending the state of Israel regardless of the cost or domestic backlash, stating: "𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘐𝘴𝘳𝘢𝘦𝘭, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵 𝘐𝘴𝘳𝘢𝘦𝘭, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢." He has repeatedly attacked American political figures and US foreign policy decisions when they do not align 100% with the directives of the Israeli Prime Minister.

Discussing how a political lobbying group uses money to sway American elections or foreign policy is standard political analysis. Trying to shut down that discussion by accusing people of attacking "Jews" when they are criticizing a foreign government and its US-based political action committees is the real conflation.

Qatar wields far more influence thru the billions more its thrown around in media and universities

Paul's avatar

Bringing up Qatar is pure whataboutism.

University grants and media infrastructure are soft-power investments. They are fundamentally different from direct PAC campaign spending used to finance elections, primary critics, and buy legislative policy.

Furthermore, Qatar is not committing genocide or invading its neighbors, making the comparison totally invalid.

One country's soft power does not excuse institutional corruption or foreign policy capture:

https://www.opensecrets.org/fara

Movin' On's avatar

No its framing perfectly legal activity by Americans in contrast to actual foreign manipulation.

There is no genocide. There is much precedent for false accusations of genocide proceeding real ones however. Rwanda, Nazi Germany, Ottoman Armenia.

Israel has killed an average of 2 Gazans per bomb dropped. Thats shows great care in their actions. The population has increased. The fact that Israel could have killed 100s of thousands before new years 2024 rolled in.

Paul's avatar

Legal isn't the same a moral and it's still manipulation on behalf of a foreign country.

The genocide in gaza is well documented and confirmed by multiple orginisation!

- ICJ Proceedings (South Africa v. Israel): https://www.icj-cij.org/case/192

- Amnesty International Report: https://www.amnesty.org/en/petition/end-israels-genocide-against-palestinians-in-gaza/

- Doctors Without Borders / MSF Analysis: https://msf.org.uk/issues/gaza-genocide

- UN Human Rights (OHCHR): https://www.ohchr.org/

Human Rights Watch: https://www.hrw.org/

Israel has dropped 18,000 bombs on Gaza that is evidence that they're carpet bombing and deliberately terrorising the civilians population.

More evidence that Israel is evil!

"Jewish people comprise approximately 12% of New York City’s population." Those Irish Americans of New York are around 5-6%. Both parties faced similar forms of 'nativist discrimination' at the start of the 20th Century. I really enjoyed Ken Burns' "The US and the Holocaust", one episode covering migration to the US really drove that commonality home, that shared story. And, indeed, we have a journalist by the name of Jenny Holland (also on Substack but is a rare voice) who makes excellent points by asking why they had comradery.

The Irish and Jewish New Yorkers worked together, lived in working class neighborhoods, were made of doers and dreamers that dared to climb to improve their lot (and did! :D). Weirdly though, Jenny also points out that we disliked Britain...another common point-but that view settled, then passed for the Americans after finding Britain a tremendous ally in WWII....whereas that view was allowed to fester for people in my Republic, for they have HELD onto that view- they still HATE (and yes HATE is the word) their Open Society neighbour. I even think it surprised some Irish American colleagues on X (I'm originally from out the back'a Laois, "ya take a left at Clancy's Gate and face Wesht":P but we're a small motley crew backing the Irish Jewry )

But is that comradery between both neighborhoods even now rifting, in the likes of Brooklyn, New York? I wonder. If so, it's a damn tragedy. However, I, as ever, will try lead by example and join the Americans- I'll take on the Irish American moniker in time and sit down with my future countrymen to have that difficult chat.

We're friends.

The Irish and Jews.

And that extends to the Republic and the Jewish State.

We've always been. And Britain is now too. We need not fall out over a terrible lie that any three such nations are an enemy. Whale emoji.
